Ever since Greek times, The Golden Proportion, also known as the golden ratio, has been used to design pieces of art, pyramids, Greek structures, and is even used today to design buildings. It is present in nature with the wings of a butterfly, the body of human, the pedals on a flower, and can even be applied to an individual smile. The ratio is carried out with the length and width of the face. It’s divided and measured with the segments of the face. While many of us strive to maintain a beautiful smile, experts deem some smiles more beautiful than others. Some celebrities for example, Hilary Duff and Miley Cyrus, are known for sparkling smiles. Braces in NY can help achieve that celebrity smile.
Glowing smiles leave us wondering what makes some smiles more attractive than others, the answer lies in the Golden ratio. The “ratio” is 1.61803398875. It explains the percentage each tooth should be in your mouth. It also rules that there should be minimal gum exposure in a smile. Your two front teeth together create a golden rectangle; their width is about 70% of their height. This ratio is carried out with the rest of the teeth with the help of braces in NYC. The proportions end up being around 10%, 15%, 25%, 25%, 15%, 10% which equals a 100% smile.
While we all may not be born with a smile that follows the golden proportion of perfection, New York Orthodontist, Dr. Bukholts can design a perfect smile with the proper steps. Hilary Duff is known for her glowing smile. Those radiant whites took some time to design. She needed porcelain veneers for her smile and when she received her first set in 2005, she wasn’t satisfied. The smile didn’t fit the ratio. The teeth were too long and disproportionate from the rest of her face. In 2008, she had her teeth redesigned to fit the ratio and her face. Now her smile fits the golden proportion, and her teeth look more natural.
Miley Cyrus, who had a “snaggletooth,” and some spaces on her bottom set of teeth, underwent cosmetic dentistry to provide herself with a near golden smile. Unlike Duff, Miley did not take the proper procedures to straighten her teeth with orthodontic treatments and her right center tooth overlaps the left a tad.
Victoria Beckham is another case of the golden smile failed. She spent a reported $40 thousand on her teeth. She didn’t take the necessary procedures to straighten her teeth. So after the veneers and the whitening, her teeth still look below average.
Accomplishing a golden smile can take more than a set of veneers. Miley Cyrus could have undergone a short time of braces or even Invisalign in New York to fix her front teeth, she wanted the quick fix. Victoria Beckham’s teeth needed extensive orthodontic treatments to correct her bite; instead she took the faster approach and never corrected the problem nor achieved a golden smile. Why should someone choose orthodontics in New York to achieve the golden smile? Veneers can only fix so much of an issue. They cannot fix an alignment of teeth or a bite. They aren’t capable of moving teeth in the case of a protrusion, crowding, or spacing.
Dr. Bukholts’ and our staff at Perfect Smiles Orthodontics welcome any questions you may have about designing your golden smile. We will take the steps to ensure you leave with a smile the Greek’s will be impressed to measure!

Why is it important to correct your bite with braces in NY? While a beautiful smile increases confidence and is often associated with physical attraction, the benefits of a straight smile push beyond our outward appearance. The alignment of our teeth can affect our health, the confidence we feel inside, and how we function throughout our daily lives. While many people’s teeth are irregular in some way, severe bite irregularities can lead to:
Difficulty chewing & eating
Jaw or joint problems
Misfunction of surrounding teeth
Pre-mature wear of teeth
Increased risk of gum disease
Types of common, treatable cases of orthodontic bites include open bite, overbite, under bite, and cross bite. Understanding the difference between each will better assist you and your orthodontist when it comes to choosing braces in NYC!
Open bite: open bite occurs when your upper and lower teeth do not meet when you bite down. Parafunctional habits, such as tongue thrusting, thumb sucking, and nail biting, often lead to the open bite. As a result of this uneven bite, more pressure is placed on the back teeth, often leading to premature wear. Braces in NYC will align your bite, making it easier to eat and preventing uneven wear of the teeth. In some cases, extrusion of the front and anterior teeth or surgical correction of the jaw may be required.
Overbite: overbite occurs when the upper front teeth protrude over the lower front teeth. Also known as a deep bite, the overbite can lead to jaw problems, such as TMJ. Braces treatments, such as invisalign in Manhattan will bring the teeth back together to proper alignment.
Under bite: under bite occurs when the lower teeth extend past the front teeth. Undergrowth of the upper jaw or overgrowth of the lower jaw lead to the under bite, result in tooth erosion, jaw pain, and eating problems. Braces in New York will correct the under bite, though in some cases, tooth extraction may be necessary.
Cross bite: upper teeth that rest inside or outside of the lower teeth occur when there is a cross bite of the teeth. Cross bite leads to difficulty chewing and can also cause the jaw to shift to one side as if grows. Braces, including clear braces in NY, will help patients realign teeth misaligned as a result of cross bite.

Did you know that proper care and compliance of your braces could shorten treatment time? Our NY Orthodontist, Dr. Olga Bukholts, offers some advice to braces wearers to help ensure you optimal treatment. Diligent oral hygiene, for example, will keep teeth and gums healthy, resulting in teeth that shift swiftly without setbacks. With all braces, proper oral hygiene includes brushing with fluoride toothpaste and flossing with a specialized water flosser after every meal. Additionally, avoiding sticky and hard foods will help ensure braces wires do not break and that patients do not develop cavities. Cavity treatment requires the removal of braces during treatment to fix new decay, which can result in delay of treatment. While braces share proper care and compliance techniques, knowing how to care for the different types of braces will help you when it comes to choosing your Braces in NYC.
Traditional Braces: While wearing traditional braces requires patience, consistency, and careful planning, achieving a straighter smile is often faster with brackets and wires. When caring for teeth and gums with braces, patients must monitor their diet and pay close attention to their dental hygiene routine. You will want to brush teeth and braces with a soft bristled toothbrush. Working in a circular motion, you will want to clean the outside of the teeth, the chewing surface, and the tongue. Tilt your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to clean both the top and bottom teeth. Additionally, braces wearers should use a proxy brush to clean under braces wires. When using a proxy brush, insert it under the wires, ensuring you clean to the right and left of the brackets. Similarly, when flossing, be sure to direct the floss under the arch wire and clean the gums between and against each tooth, working your way around the mouth. For easier threading under the arch wire, patients may use a floss threader. Patients should avoid hard, sticky, crunchy, and chewy foods as they can become stuck in braces, break brackets, and set back treatment time. Learn more about braces in New York.
Invisalign®: One of the reasons clear aligners have grown so popular is due to the ease of cleaning teeth. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign® trays can be removed when eating, brushing, and flossing. Consequently, there are no diet restrictions and patients do not need to worry about food becoming trapped in wires or brackets. Invisalign® in NYC allows patients to maintain optimal oral hygiene with less hassle thanks to clear braces technology. Learn more about NYC Invisalign
Lingual Braces: While lingual braces sit behind the teeth, taking care of your teeth during treatment with the lingual system is similar to cleaning teeth with traditional braces. Patients must ensure they clean both the outside of teeth and around lingual braces at an angle and in a circular motion. As with traditional braces, patients should direct floss under the arch wire and clean between each tooth. Unlike braces that rest on the front of teeth however, lingual braces allow easy hiding of any calcium spots some patients develop as a result of improper dental care.
